How to size a trailer

What size trailer (GVWR) do I need?

Take your heaviest expected load, then size the trailer so its GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) comfortably covers the cargo plus the trailer's own weight โ€” roughly load ร— 1.35. A 2,990 lb GVWR single-axle suits light landscaping loads; 7,000โ€“14,000 lb tandem axles cover equipment, dumps, and vehicles.

Single axle vs tandem axle โ€” which do I need?

Single-axle trailers (up to ~3,500 lb GVWR) are lighter and easier to maneuver for small loads. Tandem (dual) axles carry more weight, tow more stably at highway speed, and are required above ~3,500 lb โ€” choose tandem for equipment, dumps, and anything over about 2,000 lb of cargo.

How do I match a trailer to my tow vehicle?

Your tow vehicle's rated towing capacity must meet or exceed the fully loaded trailer weight (cargo + trailer). Also match the hitch class and, for heavier trailers, use trailer brakes and the correct ball/coupler size.
